Overview

The Actuarial Analyst I / Actuarial Analyst II / Senior Actuarial Analyst conducts analyses on rate setting, reserving, claims and revenue forecasting, stochastic modelling, budget variance, capital modelling and other actuarial analyses on as needed basis. The Actuarial Analyst will also collaborate with staff from other areas such as Pricing, Reinsurance, Valuation, Underwriting, Capital Management, Enterprise Risk Management, Investments, Finance, Actuarial Forecasting and Customer & Product Value to work on joint tasks and projects. The Actuarial Analyst must maintain confidentiality due to the extensive impact throughout the corporation and the public.   
                                                                

The Actuarial Analyst will have access to corporation’s Actuarial Development Program (ADP) and ongoing successful completion of actuarial exams or modules is required to remain in the program. Although the Actuarial Analyst may be recruited into a single area at the onset, they will also have an opportunity to rotate into other actuarial areas in the company.

The Senior Actuarial Analyst is expected to take full ownership of certain tasks and deliverables, communicate results to senior management and mentor actuarial analysts and students.

Responsibilities

  • Acquire the underlying claims and exposure data from the corporation’s Enterprise Data Warehouse and other databases.
  • Liaise with applicable departments and forecasting committees to acquire required business knowledge.
  • Perform complex actuarial analyses, rate modelling and stochastic modelling using actuarial and/or statistical tools, techniques, and software.
  • Conduct forecasting analyses on claims, premiums, and exposures for all lines of business.
  • Create and maintain monthly executive reporting on claims, premiums and exposures for all three lines of business.
  • Deliver data driven insight in a clear and concise way to all stakeholders.
  • Communicate and illustrate the story that the data is telling the audience.
  • Collaborate with staff from other areas such as Claims, Commercial Lines, Valuation, Pricing, Capital Management, Financial Planning & Analysis and Enterprise Risk Management to work on joint tasks and projects.
  • Assist in preparing presentations for internal or external stakeholders.
  • Participate in specialized research projects.
  • Prepare the relevant sections of the corporation’s annual General Rate Application and respond to questions from the Regulator and interveners.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Post-Secondary degree with an Actuarial Science, Mathematics, or Statistics Major.

Actuarial Analyst I:

  • Successful completion of a minimum of two actuarial exams or modules as outlined in the ADP policy.
  • Experience in an actuarial or mathematical environment is an asset.

Actuarial Analyst II:

  • Successful completion of a minimum of three additional actuarial exams or modules as outlined in the ADP policy.
  • Two years of experience in an actuarial environment.
  • Experience in providing guidance and constructive feedback to peers.

Senior Actuarial Analyst:

  • ACIA designation.
  • Five years of experience in an actuarial environment.
  • Experience in providing guidance, constructive feedback and mentorship to peers.
  • Experience in presenting analysis and findings to leadership.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and VBA skills.
  • Working knowledge of PowerBI, R, SQL, and Python would be considered an asset.
  • Intermediate/Advanced analytical skills to present results in comprehensive report.
  • Strong communication skills to present information effectively to various audiences.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively as part of a team and coordinate with other departments.
  • Work with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
