Overview

Under the direction of the Assistant Manager, Project Accounting, the Project Cost Accountant is responsible for controlling project costs through reporting, monitoring, analysis, and collaboration with the Project Management Office (PMO).

 

The Project Cost Accountant is responsible for the interpretation of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as they relate to project costs and the related impact to the corporation upon adoption of new standards. This position prepares the interim and year-end financial audit documentation and responses. This position is the lead for the general rate application (GRA) information as it pertains to project costs, such as capital and expense workbooks, appendices, and tables, including responses to related information requests.

 

The Project Cost Accountant keeps up to date with changes and aligns forecasting and reporting with industry and corporate trends, such as agile portfolio management methodologies. The position mentors Project Cost Analysts, assisting them in the development of analytical skills and business knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex data and statistical analysis to identify the underlying causes of project cost trends and anomalies.
  • Collaborate with the project management office responsible regarding forecasted and actual results and financial variances, as required.
  • Proactively investigate and escalate project cost trends and anomalies as required.
  • Prepare various reconciliations, third party filings, analysis, and financial reports on the financial performance of corporate initiatives, including allocation of corporate project expenses.
  • Improve and deliver monthly financial reports that identify project cost performance.
  • Prepare the monthly financial accruals and other project cost related journal entries.
  • Participate in project cost forecasting as part of the annual rate setting process, in conjunction with other departments.
  • Professionally, concisely, accurately explain the underlying causes of project cost trends and anomalies.
  • Work with the PMO to identify project cost-related reporting needs.
  • Provide advice regarding finance management and forecasting.
  • Mentor Project Cost Analysts in developing methods for moderately complex diagnostic analysis and interpreting and communicating results.
  • Create, automate, and maintain project cost-related reports and dashboards using tools like Excel.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Professional accounting designation (CPA, CA, CGA or CMA).
  • Completion of an International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) accounting course is an asset.

Experience:

  • Six years of related accounting experience in forecasting and/or budgeting (corporate and/or project related).

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge and experience with MS Office including Word, Excel and Outlook applications.
  • Advanced technical foundation in accounting with intermediate knowledge of related principles (IFRS,).
  • Working knowledge of financial information systems and software applications with a focus on financial reporting, budgeting, and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of Project Management principles.
  • Working knowledge of budgeting principles.
