Overview

As the Technical Communications Specialist you are responsible for the timely creation, preparation, and delivery of written and online business information and technical communications to Manitoba Public Insurance frontline staff and external business partners.


You will work with internal and external stakeholders to develop technical communications using best practices to ensure the readability and usability of the information, with the objective of enhancing customer service, increasing on-the-job effectiveness, and developing staff and business partner knowledge and skills.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing, delivering, and maintaining internal and external technical communications programs/plans through website technology, in coordination with other MPI departments.
  • Conduct knowledge audits and needs assessments to identify appropriate documentation to support specific stakeholder needs.
  • Ensure information accuracy and completeness through analysis, research, content owner involvement and approval, in accordance with Knowledge Management practices.
  • Develop and maintain online writing and editing guidelines for structured content and minimalist writing according to the department’s technical online writing standards and industry best practices for online communication.
  • Develop knowledge of products or services for the purposes of communicating business requirements and/or online support materials to others.
  • Evaluate existing supporting material and user requirements by performing needs analysis, evaluating current documentation, identifying delivery options and assisting with the development of new documentation.
  • Solicit reviews and feedback of work through project approvals or departmental peer reviews.
  • Work closely with the Design and Digital Media team to develop visual communication materials.
  • Work with department managers and staff to assist in the development of materials and performance support solutions.
  • Edit the written work of others and conduct peer reviews of technical materials as required.
  • Partner with instructional design team on strategic initiatives to ensure frontline staff and business partner communication and online support requirements are met.
  • Participate in the production of larger technical communications projects as assigned by the KMS Manager or other designated KMS project lead.
  • Plan and coordinate stakeholder and user group meetings as required.
  • Provide recommendations based on industry best practices for technical communication and information development.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Communications or a related discipline.
  • Two years of experience working in one or more communication disciplines (Technical Communications, Public Relations or Journalism).
    OR
  • Certificate or Diploma in Technical Communications or a related discipline.
  • Three years of related experience working in one or more communication disciplines (Technical Communications, Public Relations or Journalism).
  • Knowledge of performance support solution development and knowledge management concepts is an asset
  • Knowledge of key concepts involved in web experience testing, structured content, and information architecture.
  • Ability to work independently, and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with leaders, peers, and clients.
  • Intermediate customer service skills with the ability to deal tactfully with sensitive issues in a confidential manner.
  • Intermediate planning, organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to transform highly technical documents into clear, concise, written material for a variety of audiences.
  • Working knowledge of documentation design and usability best practices in an online environment.
  • Knowledge of best practices and trends related to technical communication and public relations.
  • Ability to assess organizational needs and documentation effectiveness and to modify programs/documents appropriately.
  • Intermediate problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel.
  • Experience in SharePoint is an asset.
