Overview

Reporting to the Director, Special Risk Extension, the Underwriting Lead has ownership of the assessment, design, enhancements, or new development of underwriting guidelines, standards, practices, and tools for the Special Risk Extension (SRE) line of business. The Underwriting Lead is accountable for contributing to the long-term strategic and future-state underwriting vision for the SRE portfolio.

 

The Underwriting Lead works in conjunction with internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver an SRE underwriting framework and requirements which is understood and delivered by the SRE team. 

Responsibilities

  • Manage and participate in the development and execution of the underwriting controls and standards function for SRE.
  • Design and deliver underwriting standards, practices, and tools in alignment with individual transactional underwriting environment, supporting both portfolio and individual risk underwriting practices.
  • Oversee core quality assurance controls, ensuring minimum standards are adhered to and conducted in an objective, independent, consistent, and risk-based manner.
  • Collaborate with management and underwriting teams to ensure consistency in underwriting quality and execution. Develop productive working relationships with business partners and foster an environment of trust and mutual respect.
  • Assess the execution of underwriting controls and standards, identify trends, determine the potential impact of any insufficient execution, and recommend corrective actions to the business.
  • Keep current on provincial and federal issues and regulations, industry activity and trends, and freely share information with others.
  • Provide guidance and direction in the development of underwriting and training tools in partnership.
  • Oversee and serve as the main point of contact for internal and external underwriting audits and ensure compliance with guidelines.
  • Recommend, develop, and approve new products, forms, and coverage enhancements.
  • Develop underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • In collaboration with the Director, Special Risk Extension, provide input into the department’s strategic goals to support the corporate vision.
  • Provide input on the strategy for continued profitability and growth within the SRE line of business.
  • As a subject matter expert, provide market knowledge, data, and best practices for strategic projects.
  • Participate in the development of multi-year tactical solutions that allow the delivery of the approved strategic direction.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in business administration or a related discipline.
  • Completion of the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP or FCIP) designation.
  • Seven years of related, progressive experience in an insurance environment, including experience in commercial and/or fleet underwriting.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations, policies, procedures, and practices applicable to automobile insurance and registration.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of underwriting practices for automobile, general liability, and motor truck cargo.
  • Demonstrated experience working with business partners & relationship building.
