Overview

We are looking for an articling student to join our team (one position available). The articling student position is a one-year term (2025-2026) in MPI’s Legal & Legislative Services department.

About Us

Manitoba Public Insurance (“MPI”) is a provincial Crown corporation which has served Manitobans since 1971.  We provide universal mandatory basic automobile insurance coverage for vehicle owners and drivers and for private and commercial vehicles, as well as a number of optional automobile insurance products.  MPI also administers the Personal Injury Protection Plan and driver and vehicle licensing services for the Government of Manitoba.  The Corporation’s other key role is fostering safety on Manitoba roads, by educating drivers and helping communities to initiate safety programs locally.

MPI’s products and services reflect our mission of “exceptional coverage and service, affordable rates and safer roads through public auto insurance”.  We provide direct employment to approximately 2,000 Manitobans and our insurance products are distributed by more than 300 independent brokers across Manitoba.

MPI’s Legal department includes the General Counsel & Corporate Secretary, 15 staff lawyers, a paralegal, and 6 support staff.  Lawyers for MPI provide a full range of legal services and represent the Corporation in a wide variety of cases before the Manitoba Court of Appeal, the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench, Small Claims Court, as well as appearing on administrative matters at the Public Utilities Board, Automobile Injury Compensation Appeal Commission, and the Licence Suspension Appeal Board.

Responsibilities

Articling Student Responsibilities

Articling with MPI provides a unique opportunity to develop personal and legal skills in a collaborative work environment.  The work is challenging and rewarding.  The articling student will get broad and in-depth exposure to civil litigation, administrative law, insurance law, as well as extensive legal research and opinion work.

The articling year is predominantly litigation based and the student will be given conduct of Small Claim matters, motions and applications in the Court of King’s Bench.  The articling student has significant responsibilities in handling their own cases, allowing them to develop the skills needed to be a superior lawyer. The articling student carries out research, interviews witnesses, drafts pleadings, motions, and arguments, and assists senior counsel both in Court and at administrative hearings.  There are also opportunities for exposure to corporate commercial law and privacy and access work.

The articling student will work with skilled and experienced counsel who specialize in many different areas of practice.  Staff lawyers monitor the student’s work load and are available as a resource to answer questions. Legal counsel at MPI are very supportive of the articling student and have an “open door” policy whenever the student needs advice, direction or assistance.

MPI will provide the training and mentoring needed to enable you to handle your responsibilities throughout the year.  We have an in-house legal library and access to Westlaw to assist with research.  The articling student also has the support of administrative staff, allowing the student to develop their legal skills and focus on the practice of law.
